How to Attach Appliqués to Costumes
Appliqués can transform a simple costume into a stage-ready design. The best attachment method depends on the appliqué’s backing, weight, and the costume fabric. Always check the product description first—not every appliqué is pre-glued or iron-on.
Before You Begin
- Lay the costume flat and arrange every appliqué before attaching anything.
- Try the costume on, if possible, to check placement while the fabric is stretched.
- Photograph the final arrangement or mark it with washable fabric chalk.
- Test glue or heat on a hidden area of the costume.
Method 1: Sew the Appliqué
Sewing is the most secure choice for dancewear, stretch fabrics, heavier pieces, and costumes that will be worn repeatedly.
- Pin or lightly baste the appliqué in place.
- Use a matching thread and small hand stitches around the outer edge.
- Add a few discreet anchor stitches through the center of larger or heavier motifs.
- Stretch the fabric gently as you work so the costume can still move comfortably.
Method 2: Use Fabric Adhesive
A flexible, washable adhesive made for fabric can work well for lightweight appliqués and non-stretch areas.
- Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s directions.
- Apply a thin, even layer, keeping glue away from visible edges.
- Press the appliqué into position and allow it to cure completely before wearing the costume.
Avoid ordinary craft glue, which may dry stiff, discolor fabric, or release during movement.
What About Heat or an Iron?
Use heat only when the product listing specifically identifies the appliqué as heat-activated or iron-on—and only when the costume fabric can safely tolerate heat. Sequins, rhinestones, mesh, and synthetic costume fabrics can be damaged by excessive heat.
Care Tips
- Inspect attachment points before each performance.
- Spot clean or hand wash when appropriate for the costume materials.
- Lay flat to dry and avoid wringing embellished areas.
- Store costumes so appliqués are not crushed or snagged.
