How to Attach Appliqués
Our appliqués can add sparkle and detail to costumes, dancewear, jackets, bags, accessories, crafts and decorative projects. The best attachment method depends on the appliqué backing and the material you are decorating.
Before you begin
- Check the product description for size, quantity, backing and any application notes.
- Place the appliqué on your project and confirm the position before attaching it.
- Test your thread, needle or adhesive on a hidden area or fabric scrap first.
- Protect beads, sequins and stones from direct heat.
Sewing
Sewing is often the most secure choice for garments, costumes and items that will be worn repeatedly. Hand-sew around the outer edge using small stitches and thread that blends with the appliqué or fabric. Add a few interior anchor stitches on larger or heavier pieces, working between embellishments so beads and sequins are not damaged.
Fabric adhesive
A flexible adhesive made for fabric can work well for many craft, accessory and light-wear projects. Confirm that the adhesive is compatible with both the project material and the appliqué backing. Apply a thin, even amount to the back, press into place and allow it to cure for the full time listed by the adhesive manufacturer. Too much adhesive can seep through or stiffen the fabric.
Heavy or dimensional appliqués
Large, heavily beaded or jeweled pieces may need both adhesive and hand stitching for extra support. Pay special attention to corners, narrow points and areas that may bend or catch during wear.
Delicate and stretch fabrics
Use extra care with mesh, tulle, satin, velvet and stretch materials. Stabilize thin fabric temporarily if needed and avoid pulling stitches too tightly. On stretch garments, attach the appliqué while the fabric is positioned close to how it will sit when worn.
Care after application
- Follow the care requirements of the most delicate material in the finished project.
- Spot cleaning or gentle hand washing is usually safest for heavily embellished pieces.
- Avoid direct ironing, high dryer heat and harsh twisting or wringing.
- Store finished pieces so beads, sequins and stones are not crushed or snagged.
Important: Appliqués and project materials vary. These are general guidelines, so always test first and follow the instructions supplied with your chosen adhesive, fabric or garment.
